General Information on the Maryland Brain Collection

brain neuronsThe Maryland Brain Collection is managed by researchers at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center (MPRC). MPRC scientists are dedicated to understanding the causes and improving the treatment of mental illness.

The Maryland Brain Collection, started in 1988 by researchers at the MPRC, is supported by the University of Maryland, grants from the National Institutes of Health and by donations from private foundations and individuals.

The Maryland Brain Collection is associated with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland (Director: Dr. David Fowler).

MPRC scientists collaborate with scientists from around the world to understand how abnormalities in brain tissue relate to mental illness.

The purpose of the MBC is to study the following (see links for general information):

Schizophrenia

Bipolar Disorder

Depression

Suicide/Teen Suicide

Substance Abuse

These diseases can be devastating to individuals, families and communities. Families who provide permission for the study of brain tissue give a precious gift representing hope for future generations. More information for families can be found through the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI).
