Schizophrenia-Related Disorders
The Schizophrenia Related Disorders Program (SRD) is an outpatient psychiatry program dedicated to the compassionate and up-to-date treatment of those with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. The SRD program accepts Maryland residents who have recently developed a psychotic illness. The services that we provide are of no cost, however, participation in our research is highly encouraged. Compensation is provided for time spent participating in our various research opportunities. In addition, we provide transportation to and from our clinic on an as needed basis.
Clinical Focus
The clinical aspect of the SRD, namely the First Episode clinic, provides intensive services to people who have recently begun to experience psychotic symptoms. Clinical goals are to clarify diagnosis, minimize symptoms and prevent re-hospitalizations. Patient and family education about the course, treatment, and management of psychotic illness are central to our program.
Motor Disorder Clinic
The Motor Disorder Clinic provides diagnostic and treatment services to patients suffering from tardive dyskinesia (TD) and other neuroleptic related movement disorders. Clinical goals are to minimize TD, pseudo-parkinsonism, and akathisia in our patients.
Research
The major research focus of our program is the search for etiological factors of schizophrenia, early identification of at-risk subjects, treatment intervention in individuals with schizophrenia and related disorders, and novel treatments of different aspects of schizophrenia syndrome.
Research Opportunities
We are always looking for healthy adults to participate in our various research studies, which can include neuropsychological testing, experimental and conventional brain scanning, brain wave recordings, interviews and physiological testing using eye movement measures. Volunteers should be between the ages of 18-58, and will be paid $15/hour for participation. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a paid research volunteer, please call Beth Steger at 410-402-6833.
