Residency Research Track

The Research Track is a unique five-year sequence of training experiences that is specifically designed to prepare psychiatrists for research careers while ensuring clinical excellence.  Instead of postponing research training until a fellowship, the resident in the Research Track spends progressively more time in research activities as he/she progresses through the program.  The core of the research experience is a formalized relationship with a research mentor along with carefully specified written research and educational goals.

The specific assignments and time allocations are individualized, based on a proposal submitted by the Research Track Resident during the PGY I or II year. The resident is expected to complete all requirements of the standard four-year, non-research track program. The fifth year has been added so that no clinical experiences are eliminated or shortened, and to ensure that the resident will meet all of the requirements for board eligibility in general psychiatry. This program not only integrates the development of clinical and research skills, but also allows the gradual maturation of research judgment and the completion of publications and grants so that desirable academic faculty and research positions can be obtained after graduation.
